Prisoners of Conscience: Memoirs on Politics, Imprisonment, and Torture (1945–1999) is a poignant compilation of narratives from political prisoners who faced ideological persecution, imprisonment and torture between 1945-1999 in the former Yugoslavia. Through their personal accounts, the book captures the resilience and determined spirit of those men and women who resisted oppressive regimes and fought for human rights. This powerful anthology is not just a historical document but also a testament to the enduring importance of freedom and dignity.

The exhibition Prisoners of Conscience: Memories of Resistance and Dignity complements the book’s publication by offering a deeply immersive and visual exploration of the lives and struggles of political prisoners. The exhibition featured captured images of former political prisoners, past and present as well as captured images of personal artifacts such as memoirs, letters, objects from prisoners that offer intimate glimpses into their lives, combined with texts giving the overall context of the lives of former political prisoners. The exhibition material was set in a way that enables viewer to build timelines that situate individual stories within the broader struggle for human rights.

During the launch of both the book and the exhibition, a panel discussion with experts was set, sparking meaningful discussions about the importance of documenting and preserving these stories for future generations. The panel consisted of academics Vjollca Krasniqi, sociologist, Elife Krasniqi, anthropologist and Durim Abdullahu historian, who gave a general review about what the book discusses, how do societies engage with it and what is the knowledge it brings about socialist Yugoslavia and political dissidence, what is the relationship between memory and history and what are some ethical and responsible contemporary reflections society could draw from experiences of political dissidents unfolded in the book.

The event brought together a diverse audience, including former political prisoners, historians, academics, policymakers, students, and members of the public. Among attendees in the event was also the current prime minister of Kosovo, Mr. Albin Kurti, who during the 90 beginning of 00 was a political prisoner himself, in which case, he spoke highly of the initiative and the importance of addressing experiences of political prisoners in the context of today, as a tool of learning from the difficult past.

The dual launch of the book and exhibition is not just a reflection on the past but a call to action for the present and future. It emphasizes the need to uphold human rights, resist oppression, and honor the resilience of those who fought for dignity and justice. These events also provide a platform for dialogue, healing, and education, fostering a collective commitment to safeguarding freedom and equality.
