Theatre helps to explore social patterns of behaviour and communication, to identify topics that are difficult, yet important, to talk about. Approaching difficult topics through theatre is valuable because it transfers the focus from words to actions and teaches to listen to yourself and others better. To address people’s concerns and create an open and safe space for dialogue and reflection in society, together with the inclusive theatre association “Art Playback” forumZFD Ukraine programme have developed an Art-workspace ‘Pulse of the City’.
Within the framework of the project, a selected group of activists from Odesa city are trained to use various theatre and other artistic techniques to evoke social dialogue. Through the workshops they form as a group and create monthly performances that are open to the public. In addition, to training in different theatre techniques, the project is focused at developing such essential social skills as active listening, non-violent communication, ability to be empathetic for other people's stories. As actors undergoing the training are also social activists, they take these skills further into their daily life and work.
Use of Playback theatre, theatre of the oppressed and documentary theatre in the project makes it possible for participants and for audience to reflect on personal and social patterns of behaviour. The format of playback theatre allows to enact personal stories, recognizable situations from everyday life, to develop empathy and interest towards others, to have the courage to talk about sensitive matters, to create a sense of community and unity. In the performances, actors and the audience explore their personal connection to the city of Odesa, socially important topics and learn how to be more proactive in public life, how to take responsibility and ACT.
Monthly theatre performances take place in Odesa and additional theatre trainings are planned in Izmail.
